NOTABLE QUOTES FROM THE PUBLIC HEARING

Darlene vanWerkhoven of Belle Haven said the process had “languished too long in inactivity, the time has come to do something.”

Joan Kean, a professional planner from Chincoteague said “the concept of maintaining development in the established towns is correct.”

Kathy Phillips, Assateague Coastwatcher, said “extended protection along coastal bays is necessary for preservation of essential buffers.”

Robert Lentz of Pungoteague said “there are no perfect plans but many good ones. I urge you to pass this.”

Sue Mastyl of Pungoteague asked the Board to contrast the message sent by the Northampton Board in their Comp Plan with what Accomack is doing and “to work together with Northampton County.”

Audrey Leonard of New Church asked the Board to “follow a vision and protect our county as best you can.”

Ellen McFord from District 7 said “it’s not a perfect plan. It’s a start. I urge you to pass it.”

Miriam Riggs of Cashville said “it’s a framework. It’s your responsibility to protect the County from unplanned growth.”

In a humorous moment, a second George Parker appeared from Onley who said “You can’t make a decision until you make a decision. I encourage you to approve this plan.”

Dave Lumgair of Craddockville said “it’s an armature to work from.”

Wesley Edwards of Belle Haven said “let’s get to work, let’s stop the paralysis by analysis. I urge you to pass this.”

Janet Rochester of Onancock speaking on environmental issues said “if we don’t protect what we have, the quality of what we have will decline.” She went on to quote from a 17th Century English protest rhyme, which we reprint here in:

The law locks up the man or woman
Who steals the goose from off the common
But leaves the greater villain loose
Who steals the common from off the goose.

The law demands that we atone
When we take things we do not own
But leaves the lords and ladies fine
Who take things that are yours and mine.

The poor and wretched don’t escape
If they conspire the law to break;
This must be so but they endure
Those who conspire to make the law.

The law locks up the man or woman
Who steals the goose from off the common
And geese will still a common lack
Till they go and steal it back.
